Cracking the Sacramento Cold Cases

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A former law enforcement officer wanted in a series of “horrific” decades-old sexual assaults in Northern California was arrested based on a combination of DNA testing and genetic profiling, authorities said Monday. Accused of violently raping women in the Sacramento area in the early '90s is now behind bars after DNA gave him away and dogged police work brought him in, local law enforcement leaders say.

Mark Manteuffel, 59, was arrested on Friday in suburban Atlanta. He worked for decades in the federal Bureau of Prisons and as a law enforcement and criminal justice lecturer at California State University, Sacramento, authorities told reporters. Sacramento law enforcement agencies traced him after a break in a cold case.

At a news conference Monday afternoon, the heads of law enforcement agencies involved gathered to announce the news. They included Sacramento Police Chief Daniel Hahn, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones, FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Sacramento Field Office Sean Ragan and Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig.

On the evening of May 5, 1992, a 52-year-old woman living in Sacramento County arrived home, parked in her garage, de-activated her security alarm and was almost immediately attacked by a man who had been lying in wait in her home, Jones said.

For more than three hours, he said, the man sexually assaulted the woman.

"Various sexual acts were committed against her until ultimately the suspect fled the residence," Jones said.

The woman survived.

Sacramento Countywide Probation Sweep

Sacramento County Probation Department officers arrested 14 parolees Wednesday after conducing a countywide probation compliance sweep, the department said.

Officers conducted 104 probation searches and recovered 10 grams of mushrooms, 1.5 grams of heroin, 1.75 grams of methamphetamine, four narcotic pipes, narcotic paraphernalia, two 9mm pistol magazines and 10 rounds of ammunition, according to a news release Friday from the department.

“The focus of the sweep was to conduct compliance searches, serve warrants, and attempt arrests of individuals assigned to probation supervision in the Family Violence Unit who are in violation of their terms and conditions of probation,” the release said.

Patricide, Matricide in NFL Player Case

Authorities say the son of a former NFL lineman wanted on murder charges in Minnesota for the shooting of his parents was arrested Saturday in Mexico.

The Todd County Sheriff's Office says 22-year-old Dylan John Bennett was arrested on second degree murder charges at a hotel Saturday in Cancun.

Authorities say Bennett had contacted County Sheriff Steve Och earlier in the day to say that he would turn himself in to the FBI. But a sheriff's office statement said the arrest by Mexican authorities came before the information could be communicated to them.
